It is a bird of mainly nocturnal activity, it can be heard with its characteristic cry that gives it its name and sounds like: Tuuurrllliiitttt. In the plain of Lleida, it is known by the nickname “Samarlic” for the same phonetic reason. It breeds on the floor of the fields which have been already worked by farmers, where its best defence is mimicry with the environment. When the tractor is approaching to work the field, the bird takes the eggs with its beak and moves them so that they are not crushed. Once the chicks hatch they maintain this tactic of concealment to avoid predation.
