The most spectacular sight of this colourful bird is during their ‘bridal dances’. Male and female are face to face and begin a dance based on the imitation of movements, moving their heads in all directions.

The male often goes down to the bottom of the pond to fetch the female some algae as a present. Once the chicks are born, the mother places them on her back in an excellent imitation of an aircraft carrier!
