As the name implies, what stands out most about this medium -sized owl is that two feathers which stand out at the top of the head, looking like two ears. The true function of these feathers is the intimidation of possible predators. The real ears are two holes hidden under the plumage.

Dozens of these owls can meet in a single tree in winter.
