European Roller

Coracias garrulus

30-32 cm

66-73 cm

close to the threat

drylands, open fields
scattered trees

Flying invertebrates
and terrestrial invertebrates

The current popular perception is that spectacular, flamboyantly coloured birds are from exotic and distant countries. The European Roller is just one example that this is not always the case. Its electric bruise has decorated the colour palette of the drylands of Lleida every spring and summer since time immemorial.

The name in Spanish (carraca) refers to its song, as it is very similar to the instrument of the same name and is easily identified.
