It belongs to the ardeid family and, surprisingly, these birds are the ones that cause the most injuries to scholars because they have a very long neck and often attack anything that shine (eyes and teeth being popular targets).
The etymology of the word could come from a tool with the same name, a kind of hook that is used to catch ropes in wells.
