Although it would seem logical that its name comes from the onomatopoeia of its singing: Pu-pu-pu, there are articles that raise the possible alteration of the original word Put, which would come from the verb Pudir. This would refer to the stench that is emitted from their nests and the chicks that inhabit it, due to the accumulation of feces.
